Our Materials

Designed to Be Worn

Every piece in the Uncommon James collection is made to be worn, layered, stacked, and lived in. Here's what goes into each one.

Gold Dipped

Our signature gold finish starts with a brass base and is dipped in high-purity 24K gold, refined to achieve the warm, balanced hue of classic 14K jewelry. The result is the rich gold color you know and love from Uncommon James, designed for everyday styling.

18K Gold Vermeil

Our Vermeil is crafted with 18K gold over a sterling silver base, sitting in the demi-fine category as more precious than gold-plated brass, and more accessible than solid gold. We apply 2.5 microns of 18K gold over 925 sterling silver, which is above the industry minimum and the same standard used by fine jewelry brands. Vermeil is the best choice for sensitive skin, both sterling silver and 18K gold are hypoallergenic metals.

Sterling Silver

Our sterling silver pieces are crafted from rhodium-plated 925 sterling silver, 92.5% pure silver with copper added for durability. The rhodium finish protects against tarnishing and resists scratching. Sterling silver is hypoallergenic and a timeless choice for those who prefer a cooler metal or have sensitivities to base metals.

Palladium

Our silver-tone jewelry starts with a brass base and is finished with palladium, a naturally white precious metal prized for its bright, luminous appearance. The result is a polished silver tone designed to complement our gold collection beautifully.

Frequently asked questions

Is Uncommon James jewelry nickel-free?

Yes, all Uncommon James jewelry is nickel-free.

What is the difference between gold-plated and gold vermeil?

Gold-plated jewelry features a layer of gold over a base metal, such as brassor stainless steel. Gold vermeil features a thicker layer of gold over sterling silver. Both offer a beautiful gold finish, with different materials and construction.

Does Uncommon James jewelry tarnish?

Like most jewelry, exposure to moisture, chemicals, and everyday wear can affect the finish over time. To preserve its shine, we recommend removing jewelry before showering, swimming, or exercising and avoiding direct contact with perfumes and lotions.

What are pieces labeled "24K Gold Dipped" made of?

Our 24K Gold Dipped jewelry starts with a brass base and is finished with high-purity 24K gold, refined to achieve our signature warm, 14K-inspired hue. The 24K refers to the purity of the gold used, while the 14K-inspired tone describes its color.

Are the stones real?

Our collections feature a curated mix of genuine stones, high-grade cubic zirconia, resin, and decorative accents. Genuine stones naturally vary in color and pattern, making each piece unique. Specific materials are listed on individual product pages.
