A beginner’s guide to necklace layering

A good necklace stack is the easiest way to elevate any outfit. You could throw on a white tee and baggy jeans and instantly make it look like it belongs in the September issue of Vogue with the right necklace stack. Building your stack can sometimes seem impossible though, which is why we asked our founder, CEO, and resident stylist Kristin Cavallari for her tips and tricks to create a necklace stack that looks polished without trying too hard.

The 4 rules to layering necklaces

1. Play with length

Make sure you’re working with different length necklaces. Personally, we love a stack of 3 — working with an odd number makes it easier to create a stack that feels effortlessly complete. You want the first necklace to hit your collar bone and the other two to fall below it and each other. Kristin’s favorite trick: make your longest layer a pendant necklace or lariat necklace — it will naturally fall below your other necklaces and make getting started easy.

2. Spacing is key

When you’re layering, make sure there’s some room between each necklace. This will give each necklace its own moment and create movement that draws the eye up and down your stack. As an extra bonus, the right spacing will also keep your necklaces from getting too tangled with each other.

3. Find your hero

If you don’t know where to start when building a necklace stack, Kristin recommends starting with a hero necklace. This can be the pendant necklace or lariat necklace we talked about earlier. This will give you a good starting point, determine your longest length, and help you build the supporting layers.

4. Don’t be afraid to mix

Mix any and everything you can. Textures, metals, materials. Play around with mixed metals, beaded styles, color, and different types of chain necklaces. This will keep your layers from blending in with each other so each necklace stands out on its own while complementing the others in your stack. It doesn’t hurt that this also makes it more fun.

Got the hang of building a necklace stack, but also want something you can throw on and not think twice about? We have pre-layered necklaces you’ll love and Kristin’s necklace stacks at a special price — only for you.
